George's
Home (1950-1962)
25
Upton Green
George was
one of four children of Harold and Louise Harrison. This large family
had been living in a "two up, two down" while waiting for a
Council house (homes built by the City of Liverpool to meet the need for
quality housing after World War II). After eighteen year's wait, their
turn came. The
Speke estate, on the southern end of greater Liverpool, had been newly
built when the Harrison family moved there in 1950. George was years old.
In 1954,
George attended the Liverpool Institute in the city center. He would often
ride the same bus to school as the boy who lived around the corner from
him, Paul McCartney, and the two soon struck up a friendship based on
their mutual love of music.
George's
mother was a big fan of her son's early musicianship. In 1956, George
and his brother Peter played their only gig in the Rebels band
at a nearby British Legion Club. After George joined the Quarry Men,
the group begun by John Lennon which Paul McCartney joined in 1957, this
home was a favorite rehearsal space for the group. The group even performed
at the home on the occasion of brother Harry's wedding reception on December
20, 1958.
The Harrison
family continued to live in the home until 1962.
